Parish Magazine for December 2006

Pencil sketch by W A Green

We extend a warm welcome to Sue, Tony, Claire, Peter and Anthony who have come to live at Roseleigh and are already part of St Mary's family.

You may have noticed our new blue altar cover, this has been worked and donated by Aileen Hood. Many thanks Aileen for this labour of love.

Harvest Thanksgiving

A packed church celebrated Harvest Evensong led by Preb Alan Jevons on October 8th, followed by hot supper at The Bennnetts End Inn during which we auctioned the produce which had been generously donated and which had so beautifully decorated the church. Many thanks to all who contributed the food and the flowers in the church and the raffle prizes and special thanks to Pauline and Steve who generously made us so welcome at The Bennetts End Inn. The collection of £91.06 has been sent to Sight Savers and the auction and raffle raised over £160 for church funds. It was a very happy and successful evening.

Church Building - Repairs and Restoration - Project 1 East End and Chancel

Movement of a different kind. Heritage Construction Limited have been awarded the contract to carry out the necessary repairs and restoration work to the Chancel and to the East End Window tracery and stonework. Work is scheduled to start on November 6th with the delicate task of under-pinning the east and north walls to arrest the movement at this end of our church building. The second phase of the work will be to insert a cintec anchor tie through the centre of the entire east wall and then to renovate or replace the stone work tracery of the window. The existing mix of Portland cement and lime render will be removed and replaced with fresh lime mortar in line with the original Victorian design concept. Our Burne-Jones/William Morris stained glass can then be reinstated after its restoration. The work is expected to take between 12 and 14 weeks and is, of course, dependant upon the weather. We are expecting to be able to use the church for all of our services and events during this period. Further to this the PCC fabric working party has been hard at work to repair and restore the ground water gullies around the tower plus the wire brushing and repainting of all the cast iron rain water goods are now completed. My grateful thanks to all of you who have worked so hard to bring this part of our undertaking to such a satisfactory conclusion. — Tony Easteal

From the Parish Register

Funeral 10th October - Mie - Partner of John Salisbury

Mie was born in Denmark and lived for a while in Shrewsbury before settling in Whitton where she and John made many friends and loved Whitton so much that they decided to spend their working lives here. Mie worked hard and played hard being an enthusiastic member of Woofferton Ladies' Football Team. She never forgot her roots in Denmark and they loved going back to spend time with her family. Everyone in the parish sends their condolences to John.

A Prayer for Christmas Time

As the world is reminded of love and peace in the words of the carols, may the reality of a God who loves us transform our thinking and energise our plans for the future.  Amen
