Tony and I would like to wish you all a VERY HAPPY AND PEACEFUL NEW YEAR.

Rev Judith Dunkling

Our prayers and best wishes go to Rev Judith Dunkling, who is to be away from us for some while yet, we all hope for the best possible outcome and we wish Judith and her mother Carol peace at this uncertain time.

Barbara Measham

Although now resident in Ashford Carbonnel, Barbara is a regular worshipper at Whitton St Mary's. We were sorry to learn of her illness and recent surgery. Our thoughts and prayers are for her speedy recovery.

Christmas Band Concert

A decade on and we are still managing to fill the church for what has become an annual Christmas Concert with the Bell Inn Band. As always the programme felt exactly right with a good mix of traditional carols, new and interesting arrangements of familiar Christmas music and some pieces which allowed the audience to participate. This is always greatly enhanced by the contagious enthusiasm of musical director Penny Jaeger. Over the years it has been lovely to watch younger members of the band grow in confidence and skill. The readings this year ranged from the seasonally humorous to more sombre and thought-provoking pieces. Despite a particularly cold night the atmosphere was very warm in the beautifully decorated church. A popular part of the entertainment was a keyboard recital by Joseph Wall aged nine. Well done Joseph, we look forward to hearing more in the future. Hot punch, mince pies and sausage rolls were in plentiful supply during the interval and were very welcome on such a cold evening. Sixteen people won prizes with their ticket numbers and the lucky winner of the first prize was Tony Freeman who has acquired a winning reputation in this locality. Maybe he is going for the record. Well done Tony!

We must thank all of those who worked so hard to make the evening a success. Those who helped with the entertainment, the refreshments (not to mention the mountain of washing up) and those who so generously donated draw prizes. A large vote of thanks as always must go to The Bell Inn Band and not least to those who have supported this event over the years. The Christmas Concert was originally the brainchild of Linda Drew a decade ago and organised in the first few years by Joan Harris. Thank you Linda and Joan. The evening made a profit of around £200 for the churchyard funds.

  3. November 28th Richard Tompkins
  4. December 5th Pat Hunter

Sally Thompson writes "Many thanks once again to all the people who have continued to support the 49 Club in the past year. We have been sorry to lose one or two members but grateful to those who stepped into the breach. Just a reminder that the club has 49 members who pay £1 a week; from this princely sum of £49 there is a weekly prize of £25 and a donation of £24 to the church, the prize going to the person whose number matches the Bonus Ball on the National Lottery every Saturday. As a result of your membership, we will have paid out £1,300 in prizes and made a donation to the church of £1,244 in 2009. (The donation to the church was £4 less than usual because there were only 48 members in September.) Well done everyone.

You can pay monthly in advance by cash or cheque, and extra thanks are due to those who save my carbon footprint by paying several months at a time or giving me post-dated cheques."

If you would like to go on the waiting list please contact Sally Thompson on 01584-890570.

Holy Baptism 22nd November
Juliette Cerys Watkins

Philip and Sarah Watkins have now settled into their new home at Sycamore Farm in Whitton. The baptism of their daughter Juliette at a lovely relaxed and informal ceremony was conducted by the Rev Dr Sue Foster who was delighted at her first opportunity to officiate in our baptistery. After the service Christening Cake and light refreshments were enjoyed by the gathering of friends and family. Thanks also to Kath Bills for the lovely cake.

We welcome Juliette into the Lord's family.

An Epiphany Prayer

  1. Lord Jesus
  2. may your light shine our way,
  3. as once it guided the steps of the magi:
  4. that we too may be led into your presence
  5. and worship you,
  6. the Child of Mary,
  7. the Word of the Father,
  8. the King of nations,
  9. the Saviour of mankind,
  10. to whom be glory for ever. — Frank Colquhoun
