Parish Magazine for February 2011
Whitton's Got Talent
The gap in the arctic conditions gave us the opportunity to gather at Hope Bagot and Whitton Village Hall for what is becoming the traditional pre Christmas get-together. Around thirty heroes braved the conditions for what turned out to be, according to those present, “The best yet”. The format for the evening followed the usual pattern, a series of readings, recitations and terrible jokes from the twin comperes Tony and Mac. Considering the size of Whitton and its population, the level of talent on display was phenomenal ranging from the sublime (Sally Thompson's own poem about our community) to the ridiculous (Mac sitting on Tony's knee for a heart rending version of the Al Jolson classic Sonny Boy). Many thanks to Sally McGuinness and her team for the terrific food served during the interval and to Ann and Chris Kemp for the crackers and the interval quiz which after a tie break was won by Sue and Ray Amos's table. The Christmas hamper was won by Ann Kemp and the Chocoholic hamper by Carole Peplow. Also thanks to Kath Bills for the prizes for the lucky ticket draw and to Mary and Barry Winn and Ann Kemp for the hall decorating. The latter part of the evening consisted of a sing-song of all the old favourite with lusty renditions raising the roof. Many thanks to Michael Holmes, the forgotten man of these occasions, for all his hard work selling tickets and to everyone who came along to make this such a special evening. Plans are already being made for 2011's effort so you have been warned. “Be there or be square.” — Mac
PS: Special thanks to Tony and Mac for organising the whole thing. — Michael
Christmas Eve Service
Forty Five hardy souls braved the snow and ice to gather at St Mary's for our traditional service at 9 pm of carols and communion. The church floor was thankfully clear of snow due to the initiative of John Atkinson who cleared the steps and the path through the churchyard. Many, many thanks to John for his hard work, it was greatly appreciated by all. The service was conducted by Rev Hilary Morgan and the sermon preached by Rev Sue Foster so many thanks to them. The Christmas Eve service is one of those special occasions in our church year when the singing of all those carols, familiar from our childhoods, engender a true sense of continuity and community spirit. The warm glow felt by all as voices rang around our beautiful old church meant something very special on a particularly cold night. Special thanks to Chris Wall for providing the Christmas tree and to Mary and Barry Winn and Rob Evans for decorating it, to Aileen Hood for making the Advent wreath and to the team who decorated the church.
Operation Christmas Child
A rather late thank you to all who contributed to the Shoeboxes this year. It has been a good response nationwide with over a million going from the UK to Belarus, Bosnia, Haiti, Kenya, Kyrgyzstan, Liberia, Montenegro, Mozambique, Romania, Serbia, Swaziland, Ukraine (Crimea) and Kiev. Distribution in some areas has been difficult due to the weather - Belarus has had METRES of snow! This year Haiti has had its first delivery and also medical help from Samaritan's Purse. It is interesting to learn that people in the Faroe Islands in the North Atlantic Ocean also send shoeboxes - over 4,000 this year. So many thanks to all, the shoebox givers, the glove, mittens, hats and scarf knitters, the money donors and of course the nimble-fingered shoebox coverers. — Kath

Thought for the month
- If we would view through eyes of faith
- The course of each new day,
- We'd quickly see God's gracious hand
