Parish Magazine for April 2012
A Very Happy Easter to You All
Many thanks to everyone for paying their magazine subs – 2012 was a record 100% remittance. May I take this opportunity to thank all those who kindly gave extra towards church funds. In several instances it was a considerable amount.
Our thanks to Anne Jenkins for the marvellous job she did of washing and ironing the church linen. It looks fantastic.
It's getting to the point where you know that spring has sprung when we all gather at Alan and Ysy's for our annual Village Pancake Race. Again this year we were blessed with splendid spring sunshine and a gathering of some 30 or so local worthies who came to take part in the fun – some more agile and fit than others even managed to dash up to the Church steps and back, tossing their pancakes on the way. After the race we were all treated to as many pancakes as we could eat, all washed down with cups of coffee and glasses of sherry. A great morning and lots of fun and good company. Thank you to Barry and Mary for cooking the excellent pancakes, to those who supplied the sherry and most of all to Alan and Ysy for inviting us all, once again, into their home. — Tony Easteal
The Pre-AGM held at Smithy Bungalow was well attended and chaired by Rev Claire Lording. Among items discussed were: Mr McGuinness presented the audited accounts for 2011 which were agreed, it showed a healthy balance but we have the roof to repair. It was agreed to purchase a bench in memory of Dr Attlee. Fund Raising – the Bell Inn Band to be booked for December 7th for the Christmas Concert.
An invitation is warmly extended to all the friends of Whitton, to come to the Jubilee Street party to be held at lunchtime on Sunday June 3rd on the grassed area beneath the oak tree at the Hope Bagot/Whitton junction. There is to be lots of bunting, party food and hopefully lots of fun and laughter. We are most grateful for the generous co-operation and offers of help from the Rhoden family. (David has even offered to keep the grass in trim.) Parking will be at Court Lodge by kind permission of John and Pauline Atkinson. Whitton has held celebrations of this kind throughout the Queen's reign. On such an important occasion it would be especially good for as many people from the village as possible to celebrate together and help make the event as memorable as the earlier celebrations have been. Do come and enjoy the day. If you are able to help in any way, by decorating the site or providing sandwiches, cakes or similar party food, it would be greatly appreciated, but most of all we would love to have your company. — Mary Hyslop-Winn and Michael Holmes
During our March Evensong Service, Rev Claire Lording dedicated a complete new set of Burse and Veils – Red, White and Purple in memory of our dear friend Oli McPherson. They were used for the first time at Communion on 25th March.
Operation Christmas Child sent over one million shoeboxes from the UK as a result of the 2011 campaign! Worldwide over eight million were sent to: Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia, Haiti, Kenya, Kosova, Kyrgyzsatan, Montenegro, Mozambique, Romania, Serbia, Swaziland and Ukraine. Amongst them several hundred were given to children with Downs Syndrome in Kosova via The Downs Association of Kosova – a self help group set up five years ago by two mothers. We are told “The shoeboxes reach the parents with love as well as their children. They often feel so isolated, and struggle so much. To think that someone overseas is standing with them in this gracious and generous way is such a boost.” Keep up the good work! — Kath Bills
